What was meant to signal smoother roads and faster mobility around Girgaon Metro station has instead kicked up a growing health concern, our report said. Residents, shopkeepers and daily commuters say stone dust spread across newly concreted roads on JSS Road is turning the busy stretch into a cloud of fine particles every time vehicles pass, triggering coughing, eye irritation and breathing trouble in the area.
Locals say the dust problem has persisted for months and worsens during peak traffic hours.
Residents say they are battling eye irritation, persistent cough, throat discomfort, heavy breathing and sneezing. Shopkeepers have to keep shutters partly down so the dust does not settle on products. A doctor stated that respiratory complaints in the neighbourhood have increased.
Residents must wear masks going with what the doctor said. This is a must in every area where construction is ongoing. Shopkeepers, especially those selling food and beverages, must keep all their products completely covered at all times.
People need to desist from eating or drinking near dusty areas. It is very important that one washes hands and, if possible, even your face before eating. Keep the area around as clean as possible. One’s health is compromised because of the dust, and there is no need to add risks associated with dirty surroundings to the mix.
Dust control measures like water sprayers can be considered. There can also be barricades, if possible, to alleviate these problems to some extent.
Citizen safety must factor in citizen health, too.
